5 Top Fears of Outsourcing Exposed!

What is the biggest fear of outsourcing or delegating for small business owners?

We recently asked a group of small independent business owners this question. We received some very real feedback on the fears of outsourcing that we would like to address in hopes of easing your fear.

Fear #1: Paying for it

You know the old saying, “YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR?” That stands true. You can’t expect to get something for nothing. If you want quality, that is. But the most important problem with this thinking is that a lot of people look at outsourcing or hiring a virtual assistant as a loss instead of a profit center. This could not be further from the truth. Freeing up more of your time to focus on the BIGGER PICTURE or the core of your business is a plus.

Fear #2: No one can do it as well as I do

Chances are, they probably can. But you’ll never know unless you give it a shot. Most VA’s are highly skilled and are more than capable of handling a multitude of different tasks.

Fear #3: I have no clue how to organize the tasks I need outsourced

This is probably one of the most common rebuttals I hear. Most VA’s can assist you with this. So here’s a tip. Write down a list of tasks you’d like to outsource. Next to it, write the software or application you use to tackle this task (if any). And third, the purpose of the task (end goal). This will help you start to organize your thoughts and tasks making it easier to relay this information to a virtual assistant.

Fear #4: Time

If I had a dollar for every time I heard, “I don’t have time…” I’d be rich. Making time to organize tasks and collaborate with a VA seems like adding another task to your already busy schedule. And it may be – at first. But remember, the purpose of outsourcing is to ultimately free up your time. If you spend 15 minutes a day collaborating and outsourcing 8 tasks to your VA that use to consume 4 hours of your time daily, you just freed up 3 hours and 45 minutes of your time. So the “I don’t have time” excuse is exactly why you need to make the time to outsource.

Fear #5: Losing Control (AKA Parent Syndrom)

This is probably the biggest fear of all with small business owners. Learning to relinquish control. They treat the business like their child and want to protect it. That’s natural. But unless you can learn to trust other people to care about the success of your business, you will never really be in control. Now I know this is easier said than done. But it’s necessary to learn to TRUST and LET GO. It will take a little time, but you can learn to let go. Here’s a tip. Start out small. Start outsourcing tasks that are small and have minimal impact on your business. Maybe organizing your inbox or your Google Drive folders is a good place to start building trust with your VA. Once you begin to see their value and build trust with them, start adding a little more. Eventually, you’ll feel more secure about outsourcing more and more tasks and you’ll no longer have that fear. At least, not as much.
